Embracing Wellbeing during the Holidays

For me December has become a time of reflection, a time of turning to family and friends and appreciating all that they are to me and the difference they make in my life.

Because I can, I choose not to be part of the frenzy, the shopping craziness.  Instead I love to just breathe in the myriad ways that people decorate their homes and businesses. As I travel every day in my “commute” about the Island, I try to change up my route so that I can see something different. Occasionally, I find myself slowing down and even stopping for a moment to take in yet another well lit front yard, filled with every possible holiday inflatable.

In fact I think slowing down – becoming more mindful is fitting as each day becomes shorter and shorter as the Solstice draws nearer. This is the time I breathe a little more deeply and choose to be more aware of my breathing. This is a time of year I embrace the quiet of dawn with an early morning run. This is the time of year I look not to gorge, but rather to bless my food and acknowledge the difference that healthy eating and optimal nutrition has made in my life.

This morning I was feeling a bit off myself from some personal news, but as I walked in I knew that just by greeting with a smile, a small joke or compliment – I could shift their energy to a lighter space….a­nd shift mine as well! What I also know is that the well is never empty – in fact the more I “offer”, the more I have to offer!

Root for Winter Vegetables

Now that the clocks have turned back, there’s something that envelops me as I travel home in the cool, dark evening – I’m tired, hungry and looking forward to stepping into my warm, well-lit home….a fire dancing in the fireplace, and the aroma of roasted or grilled winter vegetables, all prepared by my husband, Ralf (amazing cook). My cravings for the cool, crisp salads of summer evenings are a distant memory.

One of my favorites is roasted brussels with bacon, walnuts & balsamic vinegar. For those who don’t dig pig, it’s great without the bacon as well. Low in carbs, Brussels sprouts provide a significant amount of many vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin C and vitamin K. They also contain plant phytonutrients that help the body protect against diseases, including  increasing the body’s levels of detoxifying enzymes.

Some FYI on other winter veggies that I adore…..

Sweet potatoes are packed with potassium, and are high in Vitamin A and C ,Turnips are high in Vitamin C ,Kale is high in Vitamins A and C, as well as potassium and calcium Squash is high in Vitamin A and C, as well as potassium

My Secret to Power Napping? Barbie

So I came across a great share this morning on everything you need to know about napping.  My last blog was focused on the connection on weight and sleep, so I have to add napping as a perfect way to begin to fit more sleep into your life.

Among my friends and family, I’m a famous power napper. I can nap anywhere: a doctor’s waiting room, sitting in my car, on a bench in a mall (in public places I always nap wearing sunglasses – in my mind I feel like I’m being less obvious) – I’ve even napped while getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist.

I couldn’t always nap. In fact, when my daughter was an infant and I was desperate for sleep, I would try to nap while she napped, but it never worked. But one day when she was about 3 years old, and I was forcing myself to play Barbie’s with her (OK, so I just wasn’t into Barbie’s – but I was into being with Alex), I suddenly felt so tired, so I said, “Alex, mommy is going to lay down on the floor for a minute and close her eyes – my Barbie is going to take a nap.” And I did. For about 20 minutes, I could feel myself dreaming, yet aware of everything in the room. It was if I dipped down into a well and then came right back up. I woke up feeling refreshed. And I’ve been power napping ever since.

I invite you to play with it. When you feel like a nap would really help, try slipping away, even if it’s to your car.  Set the timer on your phone. Close your eyes and see what happens. You might not fall asleep the first time, or the second, but eventually, you just might find yourself napping. The worst that will happen is you’ll have a relaxing 20 minute time out.

Are Your Sleep Gremlins keeping you Overweight?

OK, the “ Sleep Gremlins”, aren’t necessarily what you think. I like to call them the “Sleep Gremlins”, because  they behave like gremlins, running amuck with your body when you either don’t get enough zzz’s or you don’t get quality of sleep your body demands.

The “Sleep Gremlins” are 2 hormones, ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin is the ‘go’ hormone that tells you when to eat, and when you are sleep-deprived, your body produces more ghrelin. Leptin is the hormone that tells you to stop eating, and when you are sleep deprived, you have less leptin. So more ghrelin plus less leptin equals weight gain or inability to lose weight.

I know from personal experience how the “Sleep Gremlins” began to create my own personal “muffin top” when I first started going through peri menopause. And it wasn’t until I got my sleep under control, that I was finally able to transform my gremlins into allies, and lose the muffin top.

If you suspect that your “Sleep Gremlins” are out of whack –  let the end of Daylight Savings Time help you out. Don’t fight the urge to go to bed earlier  – give in and pack in the zzz’s!
